St Rose School Annual Science Fair

The gathering hall at St Rose of Lima School was full of visitors for a science fair held Thursday, April 30. On display for the evening were interactive stations overseen by upper school students, sixth, seventh and eighth grade volunteers.
Science teacher Marde Dimon said she prefers to test students on the subjects and science behind the stations, like creating goop, before the Science Fair, but this year, due to timing, only one class had the test before the night of the Science Fair.
âI like to do it before so they are really knowledgeable tonight,â said Ms Dimon.
At the goop station, students Riley Cross and Christian Blais walked visitors through creating the glue and borax solution polymer.
At another table, St Rose student Taylor Brady demonstrated why Magic Sand can be put in water and taken back out as dry. Other stations included an acid or base indicator and UV detector nail polish.
Ms Dimon said each station had about 300 activities set for visitors, and overall there were roughly 2,500 individual activities set up for people to use and learn about.
âIt takes us three weeks to prepare for this science fair,â said Ms Dimon.
When visitors arrived they were handed bags in which they could take home the different science experiments from the stations.
âEach year it gets more, and more, and more,â said Ms Dimon.
Fifth grade winners from this yearâs science fair were Alex Gerbo in first place, Sophia Davis in second place, and Zach Hamar in third place; Christina DeBartolomeo and Victoria Kirkman received honorable mention.
Sixth grade winners from the science fair were Daniel Colucci in first place, Jeffrey DePinto and John Locke in second place, and Kathryn Kerins and Haley Ryan in third place.
