Seatbelt Enforcement Project To Run For Two Weeks
Seatbelt Enforcement Project To Run For Two Weeks
Police will conduct heightened enforcement of seatbelt laws during the âClick It or Ticketâ project scheduled to run from May 18 through May 31.
The enforcement will be held during the daytime and nighttime hours.
Police say that about 92 percent of motorists in town use seatbelts, but they want to increase the seatbelt usage rate.
In a similar enforcement project held last November, police issued 95 seatbelt citations and 14 warnings. They issued 93 other miscellaneous citations, plus 166 warnings, as well as five arrests for drunken driving.
On May 18, Newtown police will work with police from Redding, Brookfield, Ridgefield, and Bethel to enforce seatbelt laws in Newtown. The group of officers will conduct enforcement in all five towns on sequential days.
Under the requirements of a new state seatbelt law, if a vehicle is driven by a person under age 18, everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt. Violators face a $120 fine.
