Chess Tournament
Two Newtown High School students, Haotian Zheng and Chris Parker, participated in the CT State Scholastic Chess Tournament on Sunday, April 26, on the campus of the University of Connecticut. The tournament was sponsored by the University of Connecticut Chess Club.
Participants competed in divisions based on educational levels up through high school. Chris, playing in his first US Chess Federation rated event, lost in the first round, but managed two and a half points out of a possible three points in the remaining three rounds of play with two wins and a draw. Haotian won his first three matches, but lost in the final round to finish with three points for the competition. Although neither player was able to secure any of the top prizes, both finished high in the overall standings.
