House: No Credit Checks Of Employees
House: No Credit Checks Of Employees
HARTFORD (AP)Â The Connecticut House of Representatives has passed legislation that prevents employers from requiring workers or prospective hires to consent to a credit check.
The legislation, which passed 109-34, now moves to the Senate for further action.
It also prevents businesses from requiring employees to provide their credit score, credit account balances, payment history, savings or checking account balances, and savings or checking account numbers as a condition of employment.
There are some exceptions to the bill, such as, if a credit report is substantially related to the employeeâs current or potential job, or if the employer reasonably believes the worker has broken the law.
Employers who violate the ban could face a fine up to $500.
