Frisbee, Flowers & Fun At Orchard Hill

The Town & Country Garden Club of Newtown, Newtown Lions Club, and the Parks and Recreation Department of Newtown are planning a nature walk and Frisbee golf for Sunday, May 17.

The Lions Club and Parks & Rec will host Frisbee golf, which will run from 10 am until 4 pm.

The Lions have put together a golf course that is available year-round, but club members will be on hand on May 17 to point out features of the course and encourage play. Frisbees will be available for players of all ages and levels, and the winners will receive free sundaes from Ferris Creamery.

For two hours, from 2 to 4 pm, the public is also invited to spend time with members of the garden club, who have been spending time marking ferns, mosses, and trees along the trails that have been laid out on land that previously housed a farm and then a sawmill. The Red trail within the nature center offers examples of everything from princess pine, Christmas fern, wood fern and jack-in-the-pulpit to red trillium, blue marsh violet, buttercup, and wild columbine.

The walk will be within Orchard Hill Nature Center, so participants should plan to meet in the parking area near the nature center’s sign on Huntingtown Road off South Main Street.

Families are encouraged to hike the mile and a half trail through areas where many native wildflowers can be seen among stately trees and meadows. There is even a brook with an amazing waterfall and remnants of an old mill from 1855.

Ten nature related questions will be posted along the walk, and prizes awarded for those who answer them correctly. Refreshments will be served.
