Head O' Meadow Bulletin Boards Highlight Kindness
Head O' Meadow Elementary School library/media specialist Bev Bjorklund explained on Wednesday, April 27, the entire school created two kindness-inspired bulletin boards. The Very Hungry Caterpillar to inspire further kind acts.
Each student and teacher at the school completed a kind act, then filled out a piece of paper, and the pieces of paper eventually created the image of a caterpillar on a bulletin board near the library. Ms Bjorklund said she was inspired by an idea online of using the image of author Eric Carle's
Head O' Meadow is part of the Ben's Bells Kind Campus program, and Ms Bjorklund said each school year she tries to do a school project about kindness.
Kind acts written in the caterpillar include, "listening," "open the door for someone," and "help someone bring in the groceries."
After the caterpillar was created with the words "kindness grows into…" under it, Ms Bjorklund said she spoke with students about how kindness develops into friendship. She also spoke with students about how caterpillars transform into butterflies as a science topic.
After a second bulletin board was covered in yellow paper and decorated with "cocoons," made from cotton batting and sticks, Ms Bjorklund said students were asked to create paper butterflies. Each student was then asked to put their name and a friend's name who does not attend Head O' Meadow on their butterflies. Teachers also filled out the paper butterflies.
"I think they did a great job," said Ms Bjorklund.
Throughout the project, Ms Bjorklund said the students displayed empathy.
