Newtown Girls’ Tennis Team On A Roll

Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team won six straight matches and carried a 10-2 record into Wednesday’s scheduled match with Masuk of Monroe.

The Nighthawks have not allowed for much drama either, winning four straight by 7-0 scores before a 6-1 triumph over Brookfield on Monday and picking up a 6-1 win at Lauralton Hall in Milford on Tuesday.

The Nighthawks’ singles and doubles players did not suffer any defeats in wins over New Fairfield, Immaculate of Danbury, and Bunnell of Stratford May 5, 6, and 7.

Top singles player Christina Ciamarra and No. 2 player Lauren Frazzetta continue to dominate and won in straight sets in each of the five matches Newtown played this past week.

In the win over New Fairfield, No. 3 player Ale Fuentes and No. 4 player Grace Winans came out on top with two set wins. Fuentes also had wins against Brookfield and Hall.

In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Megan Loose and Ashley Cech and the No. 2 team of Caitlyn O’Mahoney and Jilliana Ciamarra both cruised to two-set wins in each of the five matches.

The No. 3 pairing of Sara Benson and Stephanie Roman prevailed in two sets four times this past week. Benson combined with Nicole DeFelice for a win at third doubles in the Immaculate match.

Nicole Vournazos earned wins over Immaculate and Bunnell at the third singles position and Maria Biondi picked up a win at fourth singles in the Immaculate match.

The Nighthawks continue their push toward the playoffs with two more regular season matches. After Thursday’s scheduled match at New Milford, the Hawks will host Joel Barlow in what stands to be a competitive match, on Monday, May 17. Newtown pulled out a 4-3 win at Barlow early in the campaign.
