Bethel 5, Newtown Base Technologies 4: Newtown fought back from a 3-0 deficit with four fifth-inning runs, but lost a heart-breaker in extra innings Saturday at the Middle School field. Bethel pushed across the winning run on a squeeze bunt in the ninth inning. In the fifth inning, Newtownâs Andrew Martinez singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored when Mario Pizighelli crushed a single to center. Alex Romeo drove in Pizighelli with a single, and Ben Stoller walked. On an infield error, Romeo scored from third base, and Stoller slid under the catcherâs tag to score from second base. Newtownâs pitchers â Kaleb Rowe, Stoller, Pizighelli, John Lebinski and Greg Horne â had a solid outing, scattering just five hits over nine innings. Pizighelli and Romeo each had two singles.
New Milford 17, Newtown Base Technologies 7: New Milford exploded for 14 hits over four innings to on a cold afternoon Sunday at Volunteer Field in New Milford. Newtown jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead behind hard-hit doubles by Alex Romeo, John Lebinski, Kaleb Rowe, and Mario Pizighelli. Mike Davis also knocked in a run during the inning with an infield groundout. Davis clouted a long double in the fifth inning. He and teammates Lebinski and Pizighelli each had two hits in a game concluded by Babe Ruth Baseballâs 10-run rule after 4 ½ innings.
