Newtown Woman’s Club Regional Winners

The Newtown Woman’s Club (GFWC) has announced the winners in the GFWC State Convention that was held in Glastonbury on Saturday, May 8.

There were 247 entries in 21 arts and crafts categories. In addition to this, the literature category contest winners included two Newtown members’ entries. All winning entries will be sent to GFWC headquarters in Washington, D.C., for judging in an upcoming national competition.

Arts and Crafts –– First Place: Betty Warner, decoupage vase; Marion Thomason, etched glass; Marianne Scanlon, scherenschnitte; Flo Caron, theorem painting of basket of roses and flowers; Marilyn Alexander, child’s light green sweater; Peg Forbell, ripple pattern afghan, counted cross stitch showing basket of flowers, “Great Pootatuck Duck Race” quilt, counted cross stitch titled “Nan’s Garden,” and a wall hanging titled “Apple Orchard.”

Arts and Crafts –– Second Place: Peg Forbell, woven berry basket, crocheted cotton doily, and appliqué pillow; Marion Thompson, “Thank You” card; Barbara Dzitko, painted floor cloth titled “Santa and Ewe”; Evelyn Spera, oil painting titled “Boy With A Fish.”

Arts and Crafts –– Third Place: Peg Forbell, blue pullover sweater; Sue Lehmann, pink baby’s sweater set; Pat Denlinger, photo titled “Great Blue Heron, Utah”; Marilyn Alexander, scrapbook.

Literature Contest –– State Winners: Joan Bergquist, one-act play titled Women on the Move; Marcia Cavanaugh, short story titled “A Parting Gift.”
