Doctors recommend that everyone should learn to recognize the following warning signs of stroke and act quickly by calling 9-1-1, so that an ambulance can be sent. Remember that time lost is brain lost. The warning signs include sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of body; sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding; sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes; sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination; sudden severe headache with no known cause.
New blood pressure guidelines also were recently instituted that redefine what is healthy, and what is not. According to the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the new blood pressure guidelines are:
Normal: Below 120/80 â Action: None required.
Prehypertension: 120/80 to 139/89 â Action: To avoid developing high blood pressure, exercise more, lose excess weight, eat less salt, eat more fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy, limit alcohol, and do not smoke. If you have diabetes and your blood pressure is at this level, see you doctor.
High: 140/90 or higher â Action: In addition to the healthy lifestyle changes mentioned above, you may need medication. See your doctor.
