Among West Point Finalists
By Larissa Lytwyn
Newtown High School freshmen Paul Marcucilli and Brian Pennarola never dreamed that their interest in architecture, sparked in eighth grade technology education classes, would lead them to the well-manicured grounds of the United States Military Academy at West Point less than a year later.
The two are among ten nationwide finalists in the third annual West Point Engineering Design Competition.
The competition, supported through private donations, was created to draw the interest of potential cadets across the country.
âIn the contestâs first year, we placed in the finals,â said technology education teacher Jay Daly. âLast year, we won the championship.â
Mr Daly, Paul and Brian hope this year will prove a repeat performance.
The finals take place on Thursday, May 13.
Like last yearâs contest, the objective of this yearâs competition was to construct a bridge as inexpensively and efficiently as possible.
Each bridge design possessed its own unique style and dimensions.
The competition is entirely conducted through a cutting-edge software program accessible through the West Point website. Competitors have the opportunity to see their standing appear in a sidebar as they simultaneously âbuildâ a bridge.
Conveniently, Paul and Brian are neighbors.
âWe were always at each othersâ houses practicing and competing,â said Brian.
They plan to travel together to West Point for the nationwide finals.
âOur families are very excited,â said Paul.
âIf we win the championship, we will come to your house and knock at your door,â joked Mr Daly. âThis is very exciting. Iâm proud of these kids.â
