Mary Rose Matern, 87, of Newtown, died May 11, at Danbury Hospital, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in New York City, April 23, 1926, to Mary Tierney and Harry Lefkowitz.

Mrs Matern was employed for 27 years as a secretary by Curtis Packaging of Sandy Hook. She was an avid bridge player who greatly looked forward to her weekly games. She also enjoyed knitting, teaching seniors to play mahjong, and reading in the sun.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her sons and spouses Jack and Jane of Newtown, Rick and Ruth of Morris, George and Liz of Brookfield; daughters Joan Crobar, and her husband Tom, of North Eastham, Mass., and Marilyn of Newtown; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren survive Mrs Matern. Her husband of 48 years, Richard, and son Chris predeceased her.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm, Tuesday, May 14, at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday, May 15, at St Rose of Lima Church, Newtown, at 10 am. Interment will follow at Newtown Village Cemetery.
