Sandy Hook DUI

While on patrol in the Berskhire Road area, near Great Quarter Road, about 1:23 am on May 7, police said they spotted a vehicle traveling very slowly on eastbound Berkshire Road.

The vehicle then stopped on the road, after which it rolled onto the right road shoulder and struck some metal guardrailing, police said.

After investigating, police said they charged the driver of that vehicle, Laina Baldyga, 30, of Shelton, with driving under the influence and with making an improper turn.

Baldyga was released on $100 bail for a May 19 court appearance.

DUI Arrest

At about 10:40 pm on May 6, police stopped motorist Jason Snyder, 39, of Monroe to investigate on South Main Street, near Swamp Road.

Police report they then charged Snyder with driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right on a curve.

After his case was processed, police released Snyder on $100 bail for a May 20 court appearance.

Chevrolet Vs Nissan

Motorist Curtis McKay, 87, of 6 Laurel Road, who was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala sedan on Borough Lane about 8:20 am on May 4, stopped at a stop sign there, police said.

Motorist Wendy Eurell, 46, of 5 Cedar Circle, who was driving a 2008 Nissan Rogue SUV, then stopped behind the Chevrolet, police said.

McKay then backed up and the rear end of the Chevrolet struck the front end of the Nissan, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they warned McKay for unsafe backing.

High School Arrest

Police report that on the afternoon of May 5, they learned from school officials that a possible altercation had occurred earlier that day between two students at Newtown High School, so they investigated the matter.

Following that probe, police arrested one youth under age 18 on a charge of second-degree breach of peace.

The youth was released on a written promise to appear in court on May 16 to answer the charge, police said. State law shields the identity of people under age 18 who are charged with criminal offenses.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Evan Corigliano, 28, of Monroe went to the police on the morning of May 7 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, driving with a suspended license, and failure to drive to the right, police report.

The original motor vehicle charges stem from a June 3, 2009, two-car accident that occurred on a sharp curve on The Boulevard, near Hall Lane, according to police.

After processing on May 7, police released Corigliano on $1,000 bail for a May 20 court appearance.

Noise

Late on the night of May 7, police received several noise complaints, so they went to the area of Riverside Road and Sunnyview Terrace to investigate.

Police report they issued infractions to two people at 7 Sunnyview Terrace in connection with those complaints. Police said they gave infractions on charges of creating a public disturbance to Eric Saren, 32, of 7 Sunnyview Terrace, and to Jessica Saren, 21, of Southbury.

Such violations carry a fine which may be paid by mail, or may be appealed in court.

Evading Responsibility

Police are investigating a two-vehicle accident that occurred late on the afternoon of April 29 at the intersection of Button Shop Road and Botsford Hill Road.

In that incident, a blue Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV was struck by an unknown vehicle whose driver then drove away from the accident scene, police said.

Police ask anyone who knows the identity of the offending motorist to contact investigating Officer Liam Seabrook at the police station at 203-426-5841.

Sedan Vs Bridge

Motorist Susan Paltauf, 69, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2003 Toyota sedan southward on Echo Valley Road, near Concord Ridge Road, about 9:50 am May 8, struck a bridge abutment along the northbound road shoulder, police said.

The vehicle carried four child passengers, police said. The passengers were Matthias Paltauf, 9; Markus Paltauf, 8; Mia Paltauf, 6; and Marianna Paltauf, 4, all of 3 Concord Ridge Road, police said.

All occupants of the vehicle were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.

 

Great Ring Road

Motorist Richard Krikorian, 66, of 55 Great Ring Road was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee SUV near 42 Great Ring Road about 9:20 pm on May 4, when the vehicle collided with a deer, police said.

Krikorian was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Chain Reaction

Police report a three-vehicle chain-reaction accident on northbound South Main Street, near Appleblossom Lane, about 3:50 pm May 7.

The accident involved motorist Victoria Perez, 41, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2010 Ford Escape SUV, motorist Dorothy Nolan, 74, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2006 Toyota Corolla sedan, and motorist Jessica Allain, 19, of Monroe, who was driving a 1997 Subaru Legacy station wagon, police report.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Perez an infraction on charges of following too closely and failure to carry a current automotive insurance card.

Wasserman Way

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Wasserman Way, near its intersection with Oakview Road, about 6 pm on May 6.

Police report the accident involved motorist Taylor Shaw, 19, of Southbury, who was driving a 2011 Nissan Altima coupe, and motorist Ralph Wilson, Jr, 57, of 30 Appleblossom Lane, who was driving a 2010 Nissan Murano SUV.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Shaw a written warning for failure to drive to the right.

Windshield Damage

State police report that a Newtown man parked his black Ford Explorer SUV in the commuter parking lot on Wasserman Way, near Exit 11 of Interstate 84, where its stood from 7:10 am to 2:10 pm on May 2, during which time the vehicle received damage to its front windshield.

State police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Trooper Katrenya at Troop A in Southbury at 203-267-2200, ext 7009.

I-84 Off-Ramp

State police investigated a two-SUV accident that occurred at the end of eastbound Interstate 84’s Exit 9 off-ramp at about 6:11 pm on May 5.

Motorist Matthew Ackerman, 39, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2000 Honda CRV, stopped at a stop sign at the end of the ramp, after which motorist Leslie Mazzera, 37, of 20 Bridle Path Trail, who was driving a 2004 Lexus GX-470, stopped behind the Honda, state police said.

The Honda then moved forward, as did the Lexus, after which the Honda stopped and was then hit from behind by the Lexus, police said. There were no injuries. State police said they issued Mazzera a written warning for following too closely.

Evading

Police said they responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident that occurred on the property of Hot Shots Grille, Restaurant and Tap Room at 130 Mt Pleasant Road about 12:48 am on May 8, after which they investigated.

Police said that motorist Maria Guaman, 42, of Danbury later turned herself over to police at the police station in connection with that accident and was charged with evading responsibility and driving without a license.

Police released Guaman on $100 bail for a May 24 court appearance.

South Main Accident

Motorist Christine Anthony, 38, of 15 Maltbie Road, who was driving a 2010 GMC Acadia SUV northward on South Main Street about 12:04 pm on May 2, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Bryan Lane, police said.

Northbound motorist Joan Polzin, 66, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2009 Toyota Camry sedan, then struck the rear end of the GMC, but continued traveling, police said. There were no injuries.

Police said they found Polzin in a parking lot at 89 South Main Street about 1.7 miles north of the accident scene. Police charged Polzin with evading responsibility and with following too closely. Police released her on $50 bail for a May 17 court appearance.

Three Vehicles

A three-vehicle accident occurred near 52 Church Hill Road about 5:11 pm on May 4. All vehicles involved in the crash were headed eastward.

Motorist John Cedor, 53, of 25 Moccasin Trail, who was driving a 2009 Pontiac G-6 coupe, had stopped for traffic conditions, after which motorist Brittany Sequeira, 21, of New Milford, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata sedan, stopped behind the Pontiac, police said.

Motorist Kaitlin Brophy, 18, of 20 Boggs Hill Road, who was driving a 1984 Jeep Wrangler, then struck the rear end of the Hyundai, pushing the Hyundai into the rear end of the Pontiac, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Brophy an infraction on charges of failure to drive a reasonable distance apart and traveling unreasonably fast.

Berkshire Road

Police report an accident that occurred near 87 Berkshire Road about 5 pm on May 4.

Eastbound motorist Michael Cataudella, 54, of Shelton, who was driving a 2003 Dodge Intrepid sedan,  attempted to pass on the left eastbound motorist Jesse Carney, 78, of Danbury, who was driving a 2005 Kia Sedona station wagon, as the Kia was attempting to make a left turn, resulting in a collision, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Cataudella a written warning for passing in a no-passing zone.

Botsford DUI

Police said they responded to a one-vehicle accident near 24 Botsford Hill Road about 12:23 am on May 12.

Police said motorist Guy Peregrin, 60, of Avon was driving a vehicle that collided with an embankment.

After investigating, police charged Peregrin with driving under the influence and with making a restricted turn. Peregrin was released on $100 bail for a May 26 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Christopher Mahoney, 44, of Torrington went to the police station about 5 pm May 11 and was charged with violation of probation, police report.

The original charges lodged by police against Mahoney in 2009 were third-degree assault, assault on a police officer, and third-degree criminal mischief, police said.

Police released Mahoney on $50,000 bail for a May 25 court appearance.
