Newtown Hawks Race To Season-Opening Victories
The Newtown Hawks Middle/Intermediate school outdoor track teams competed in their first regular
season meet at home on April 26.
The girlsâ team scored 85 points to beat Whisconier and Bethel. Led by Hannah Schwatz, who won both the 1600 and 800, and Micaela Nowacki who took first in the shot put and discus the girls started the season 2-0. Jen Edwards, Jess Shairer and Megan Huwer each earned seven points in the competition while teammates Angela Saidman, Annika Edwards and Annika Fagerholm added six points apiece to the teamâs score.
Molly Begg finished second in the 1600 meter race for five points. Lexi Leidlein earned five points in throwing events and Laura Hornby added three points in the distance races. The final team point of the day was earned by Kate Hazzard in the shot put.
In the boysâ meet the Newtown Hawks earned 87.5 points to give them wins over Whisconier and
Bethel. Tyler Dulliger and Vanya Donaher each scored 14.75 points as the boys dominated their opponents in the distance events. Doug Main added 12 points in the throwing events and Will Roman ran a strong 400 meter race then added to the teamâs victory in both the shot put and the 4x400 relay events. Joey Whelan won the 1600 for seven points, and Jake Courchene-Roy garnered eight points. Cole Terry long jumped to five points. Will Roberts high jumped well enough to earn three points.
Austin Huffman grabbed third in the 400 meters to add three points to the teamâs score. Adam Woodbyrne added points in the 200 and 4x400 relay events. Chris Grosso and Kevin Finnegan each grabbed a point to round out the teamâs scoring.
The Hawksâ next meet is also a home competition, at Newtown High Schoolâs Blue and Gold Stadium, on May 13 at 4:30 pm.Â
