*Edmond Town Hall Live, a concert series to benefit restoration efforts for the Edmond Town Hall Theater, will host a performance by THE LOW ANTHEM on Friday, June 17, at 8 pm.
Based in Providence, R.I., The Low Anthem combines folk with blues, hymnals, barn-stompers and whispered meditations. The bandâs debut release for Nonesuch Records, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, was named Magnetâs #1 Album of 2009, UNCUTâs Americana Album of the Year and Boston Music Awardsâs Album of the Year. Their newest album, Smart Flesh, was released in February 2011. Rolling Stone said of the effort: âitâs as if The Band stripped their prairie-gothic majesty down to Tom Waitsâ barfly essentials.â Sounds pretty cool to me.
Tickets are $24.99 ($19.99 plus a $5 Theater Restoration Fee), and can be ordered through www.EdmondTownHall.org/TheLowAnthem. For additional information send email to william.bates@stern.nyu.edu.
*While in the vein of Newtown musicians, Newtown High School graduate William âBeaverâ Bausch will be performing with his band, GRUPO LOS SANTOS next weekend in Stamford. Barcelona Wine Bar & Restaurant, 222 Summer Street in Stamford, will host the show on Sunday, May 22, from 7:30-10 pm. There is no cover charge.
The quartet was formed in 1988 and generally plays their jazz with strong Afro-Cuban and Brazilian influences in New York City (and much further away). Next weekendâs show offers the rare opportunity for residents to stay a little closer to home while checking out what this former resident â along with guitarist Pete Smith, saxophonist Paul Carlon and bassist David Ambrosio â have been creating in order to develop a strong following in the tri-state area. Bausch is the bandâs drummer, and the band is reportedly in the mixing stage of their next album.
*As mentioned last week THE J. GEILS BAND will be at Ives Concert Park in Danbury on Saturday, August 13.
Tickets will be on sale this week (which we didnât know last week), on Friday, May 13, at 10 am. They have been set at $37 for the lawn area, and $57 to $77 for reserved seating, and will be available through www.PremierConcerts.com.
Two things I did not yet know last week about this show: One, it will include PETER WOLF as part of the headlining set; and two, openers will be THE CHRIS ROBINSON BROTHERHOOD.
*Also on sale Friday morning will be tickets for that same bill, who will be at the Oakdale Theatre on Sunday, August 11.
Those tickets will be $49.50 and $59.50, and available through www.LiveNation.com or by calling 800-745-3000.
Also going on sale through LiveNation will be tickets for UMPHREYâS McGEE, who will be in The Dome at The Oakdale on Thursday, July 14, with general admission tickets all priced at $22.50; TAKING BACK SUNDAY, with Thursday, Colour Revolt and We Are The In Crowd, July 21 at The Dome at Oakdale, $27.50 general admission; RASCAL FLATTS, with Sara Evans, Easton Corbin and Justin Moore, on August 11 at The Comcast Theatre($23.75 lawn, $76.25 reserved); and O.A.R., who will be at The Comcast Theatre on Friday, August 12 ($26 lawn, $35 reserved).
All of these shows are being promoted by LiveNation, so all of these tickets will be available through www.LiveNation.com or by calling 800-745-3000
*An Evening with DAVID CROSBY and GRAHAM NASH will not only feature the legendary vocal harmonies of this iconic duo but will also give the fans the unique opportunity to be a part of a ground breaking live broadcast of the event. The broadcast will be done over independent channel HDNet, live on Sunday, May 22, beginning at 7:30 pm. The concert will mix acoustic and plugged-in performances with a full band and will include, said Crosby via press release this week, âselections from [the musiciansâ catalog that Nash and Crosby] havenât performed live together before.â The pair will also introduce some new material, brand new songs that have yet to be heard onstage or in recordings.
The Sunday night concert will be performed at The Palace Theatre in Stamford. Tickets ($56 and $80) are still available for those who donât want to just listen in to the performance. Visit www.SCAlive.org or call 203-325-4466 for details and purchases. If youâre in the area during the week, the theaterâs box office is also open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6 pm at 61 Atlantic Street.
*SOUNDGARDEN will bring their long awaited first tour in over 13 years to Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday, July 6, at 7:30 pm.Â
Tickets are $59.50 and $69.50 and go on sale Friday, May 13, at 10 am, through Ticketmaster. Tickets will also be available at the casinoâs box office starting Saturday, May 14, subject to availability.
Until next week, Iâll be seeing you⦠on the road, where I will continue to wonder: What is it with so many people who have remote car locks? Why are so many seemingly unable to manually lock their doors before walking away from their vehicle, or at least hit that lock button on their keychain before walking a few yards away?
Questions and comments should be sent to Shannon Hicks c/o The Newtown Bee, 5 Church Hill Road, Newtown CT 06470, or shannon@thebee.com, or call the office at 426-3141. Shows listed at clubs are for ages 21 and over unless specified.
