THREE COLLECTIONS TO HIGHLIGHT TREADWAY AUCTION JUNE 7 â 8, w/3 cuts
Avv/cd set 5/13 #739005
COVINGTON, KY. â Treadway Gallery will hold its annual decorative arts auction June 7â8 in a new location at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
The sale comprises material from three collections, with an emphasis on Rookwood pottery. One group from Kansas City features a selection of Rookwood including objects as diverse as sea greens, Native American portraits and the work of Jens Jensen.
Florals along with carved organic pieces and fish scenes round out a group of Rookwoodâs rare sea green glaze. Buyers can select from a virtual tribe of Native American portraits by a wide variety of artists. More than ten examples come from artists such as Grace Young, Sturgis Laurence, Constance Baker, Edith Felten and Adeliza Sehon.
Jensenâs work, one of Rookwoodâs most distinctive artists, includes organic and stylized animals and birds, along with his modernist nude subjects.
Porcelain glaze examples by Kataro Shirayamadani, E.T. Hurley, Elizabeth Barrett Arthur Conant, Margaret McDonald, Lorinda Epply and will also be offered, including a vase by Sara Sax with decoration of peacocks. Two examples of the rare aerial blue glaze are in the auction, one by Bruce Horsfall another by W.P. McDonald. More than seven silver overlay pieces are featured, one with unusual decoration of a rabbit, while another has a group of ducks.
Iris glaze pieces by artists Kataro Shirayamadani, Ed Diers, Lenore Asbury and Carl Schmidt are represented, including one with birds by Shirayamadani, one by Schmidt with finely painted mushrooms and a rare stein also by Shirayamadani. A Rookwood Standard glaze piece highlight is a 30-inch-tall floral floor vase among the 20 pieces of this style to be offered.
Early Rookwood include a large handled ewer with chicks, a Limoges-style piece with bats and spiders, with others as early as 1882. Arts and Crafts-inspired examples include a rare carved vase with a dragon by Shirayamadani.
From a collection built by a couple in Indianapolis, Ind., there are 20 examples of Rookwoodâs distinctive and popular scenic vellums. Works by Carl Schmidt, Ed Diers, Fred Rothenbush and Sally Coyne account for most of the vases, along with a group of landscape plaques including rarities like green vellum with boats, numerous landscapaes of various sizes, and a rare example with sea green glaze executed by A.R. Valentien.
Original artworks by Rookwood artists include a rare painting by William Hentschel, a group of etchings by Hurley from his personal collection, two oils by Schmidt and a watercolor by Jensen.
This collection also includes numerous pieces of Weller Hudson, Eocean, Dickensware and a grouping of Coppertone pieces with frogs. Standouts include several large pieces of Weller Hudson along with two pieces of Eocean.
A collector in San Francisco is selling her Roseville collection focusing on Futura, including several important forms. Examples offered feature Wisteria, Falline, Ferella, Morning Glory and others from the popular middle period of Rosevilleâs production.
Concluding the sale is a large group of arts and crafts and Art Nouveau metalwork.
