Police Reports | April 30-May 9, 2017
A four-vehicle accident occurred on Church Hill Road, near The Boulevard about 5:14 pm on May 9.
Police said that three motorists who were traveling eastward on Church Hill Road stopped in response to traffic conditions.
Eastbound motorist Dawson Newberry, 66, of Newtown, who was driving a 2009 Nissan Maxima, then struck the rear end of a 2000 Mercury Sable driven by Renzo Ortega, 28, of Sandy Hook, pushing that vehicle into the rear end of a 2000 Subaru Legacy Outback driven by Monica Ortega, 27, of Danbury, and pushing that vehicle into the rear end of a 2010 BMW 328-XI driven by James Pote, 69, of Sandy Hook, police said.
The drivers of the Nissan, Mercury, and Subaru and two passengers in the Subaru all reported minor injuries, but refused medical attention, police said. Police report they issued Newberry an infraction for following too closely.
DUI Incident
At about 4:54 pm on May 7, police received a report about a vehicle that was traveling over the road's center line and speeding on Toddy Hill Road, so they went to the area to investigate.
Police said they spotted the vehicle in question make a turn onto Wasserman Way, but not use its turn signal to do so, after which they stopped it to investigate. Police report they arrested motorist Alvaro Alberto, 53, of New Milford on charges of driving under the influence and making a restricted turn.
After processing, Alberto was released on $500 bail for a May 23 court appearance, police said.
Alcohol Charge
Police report that at about 2 am on May 7, they spotted motorist John DelRossi, 19, of Newtown, driving on Glover Avenue and committing several traffic violations. Police said they stopped DelRossi near the intersection of Church Hill Road and The Boulevard to investigate.
Police report they charged DelRossi with driving under the influence by a minor with an elevated blood alcohol content, and with making a restricted turn. After posting $100 bail, police released DelRossi for a May 19 court appearance.
Court Appearance
Police reported this week that Craig Marshall, 48, of Sandy Hook had received a misdemeanor summons on a charge of simple trespassing on January 27, but he had forgotten to appear in court on that case on May 1, after which a judge issued a warrant for Marshall's arrest.
Marshall went to the police station on May 5 and was charged with second-degree failure to appear in court, police said. After he posted $92 bail, Marshall was released for a May 18 court appearance, police said.
DUI Arrest
Police report that at about 3:24 am on May 5, they observed a vehicle driven by Joseph Santoro, 20, of Newtown swerve over the road's center line while traveling on Hawleyville Road, after which police stopped Santoro on Taunton Lane to investigate.
Police report they charged Santoro with driving under the influence and with failure to drive to the right. Police held Santoro on $2,000 bail for a court appearance that day. Santoro pleaded not guilty to both charges in court and was released from custody on a written promise to appear in court on June 2.
Two Left Turns
At about 5:30 pm on May 4, motorist Dianne McIlrath, 69, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic in the westbound "left turn" lane on Church Hill Road attempted to turn left to the enter the Mobil gas station at 62 Church Hill Road. At that time, motorist Thomas Kitzmiller, 17, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2012 Hyundai Sonata in the westbound "straight ahead" lane, also attempted to make a left turn to enter that gas station, police said.
The two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Kitzmiller a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Hawleyville Crash
A two-vehicle collision occurred on southbound Hawleyville Road at its intersection with Covered Bridge Road about 3:56 pm on May 4.
In that incident, motorist Jodie Enriquez, 53, of Newtown, who was driving a 2012 Honda Odyssey minivan, stopped due to traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Tangi Giuditta, 37, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2004 Hyundai Elantra, police report.
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Enriquez to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. Giuditta received an infraction for following too closely, police said.
DUI Arrest
Police report that at about 8:11 pm on May 3, they received a call reporting that there was an erratic driver traveling northward on South Main Street in the vicinity of Sand Hill Plaza in Botsford, so they sought to find the vehicle described to them.
Police said they spotted the vehicle in question traveling eastward on Mile Hill Road, near its intersection with Queen Street, after which they stopped the vehicle near the intersection of Wasserman Way and Trades Lane to investigate.
Police said they charged motorist Juan Carlos Alvarez-Tenesaca, 27, of Danbury with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. After processing, police released Alvarez-Tenesaca on $100 bail for a May 17 appearance in state Superior Court in Danbury.
Exit 11 Off-Ramp
State police report that motorist Emma McKenna, 20, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2015 Kia Forte at about 2:27 pm on May 3, struck the rear end of a 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Victoria Herdman, 20, of Prospect, who was stopped at a traffic signal at the end of Interstate 84's Exit 11 off-ramp. There were no injuries. McKenna received an infraction for following too closely, state police said.
Down The Embankment
Motorist Kyle Gaynor, 17, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2000 Chrysler Sebring auto eastward on Alberts Hill Road, about 100 feet west of its intersection with Walnut Tree Hill Road, at about 1:37 pm on May 3, when Gaynor swerved to avoid striking a deer that was running across the road, police report.
The Chrysler, however, then drove off the left side of the road and came to rest down an embankment, police said. There were no injuries. Police report they issued Gaynor an infraction for failure to drive to the right on a curve and for failure to carry a driver's license.
Auto Theft
Police report that sometime early on the morning of Monday, May 1, someone entered an unlocked 2015 BMW 7-series auto, which was parked outdoors near a Stony Brook Road residence. The thief used automotive keys that had been left inside the vehicle to start the engine and then drive it away, stealing it, police said. Stony Brook Road is a side street extending from Currituck Road.
Police said the stolen luxury car was located in Waterbury on May 3 in drivable condition. Police urge residents not to leave keys in cars when the vehicles are unattended. Conventional keys and proximity-style electronic keys should be removed and vehicles should be kept locked when unattended to deter theft.
Jeep Vs Toyota
At about 5 pm on April 30, motorist Rebekah Vial, 20, of Naugatuck, who was driving a 2016 Toyota Corolla sedan westward on Interstate 84, about 100 feet east of Exit 10, slowed for heavy traffic conditions, and was then struck from behind by motorist Julianna Sutton, 21, of Brookfield, who was driving 2015 Jeep Wrangler SUV, state police said. There were no injuries.
Sugar/Elm
A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Sugar Street and Elm Drive about 2:28 pm on April 30, according to police.
Motorist Andrea Martin, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV northward on Elm Drive, stopped at a stop sign at that street's intersection with Sugar Street, police report.
At that time, motorist Benita Liedtke, 19, of Newtown was driving a 2013 Fiat 500 auto eastward on Sugar Street and approaching the intersection, police said.
The Jeep then attempted to make a left turn onto westbound Sugar Street, but collided with the Fiat, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Martin for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
