LITCHFIELD COUNTY FURNITURE & FURNITURE MAKERS LECTURE, MAY 30

Set 5/12  ak/cd; #739453

LITCHFIELD, CONN. — The Litchfield Historical Society will present the third in a four part lecture series Friday, May 30, as part of the society’s yearlong celebration of Litchfield County furniture and furniture makers.

Lynne Brickley will speak on “Litchfield’s Colonial Revival Collectors and Dealers 1780–1830.” Brickley received her EdD from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her dissertation, “Sarah Pierce’s Litchfield Female Academy” laid the groundwork for the exhibit “To Ornament Their Minds: Sarah Pierce’s Litchfield Female Academy” at the historical society.

Her interest in Litchfield has more recently focused on the Colonial Revival and its impact on modern perceptions of Litchfield’s history. Brickley will discuss Litchfield’s participation in the Colonial Revival movement and will highlight the many collectors and dealers who were active during this period.

The lecture series complements the society’s current exhibition, “To Please Any Taste: Litchfield County Furniture and Furniture Makers, 1780–1830,” which focuses on identifying style, construction techniques and regional attributes, and interprets the furniture as a reflection of the rapid economic and social changes in Litchfield. The exhibit is on view through November 30.

On Friday, June 6, the series concludes when Briann Greenfield will offer “Inventing American Antiques: The Origins of Furniture Collecting in Twentieth Century New England.”

All lectures in the series begin at 5:30 pm at St Michaels Church House, 25 South Street. The society will hold a reception at the museum following the lecture.

Registration is required; for information or reservations, www.litchfieldhistoricalsociety.org or 860-567-4501.
