WOODBURY â When Nick Scalise was asked recently about his newest work he commented, âThe dance on the surface is only an invitation.â
âEnduring Time,â the new body of paintings by Nick Scalise, will be on view at Beaux Arts Gallery from May 22 to July 1. The paintings reflect Mr Scaliseâs outstanding draftsmanship, which although embedded in a representational narrative framework contains echoes of deep color and geometric abstract form.
The underlying juxtaposition between graphic representation and abstract fundamentals creates a tension for the viewer. The artistâs humanitarian feelings directly affect how his subjects are executed in watercolor.
Mr Scalise continues to paint his favorite subjects: character studies of men, women and children, New England landscape, European and Middle Eastern villages and vistas. Mr Scalise works in watercolor, gouache, casein, pen and ink, pencil, oil wash and mixed media. The new collection of work speaks to his importance as a significant and accomplished artist.
Mr Scaliseâs works can be found in many private collections. He has had works accepted into exhibitions hosted by the National Academy of Design, the National Art League, the Wadsworth Atheneum, American Watercolor Society, Holyoke College, the DeCordova Museum, the New Britain Museum, and Rockport Art Association, among others.
An opening reception for âEnduring Timeâ will be hosted by the gallery on Saturday, June 3, from 4 to 6 pm. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 9:30 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday, 11 am to 4:30 pm. Beaux Arts Gallery, at 16 Sherman Hill Road, can be reached by calling 203/263-3939.
