Luke Melillo's bases-loaded walk-off single in the seventh inning sent Newtown High School's baseball team to a 5-4 win over visiting Glastonbury on May 11.

It was Newtown's 14th straight victory as the Nighthawks improved to 16-1 overall. Glastonbury fell to 13-3. Newtown won its second consecutive one-run contest after edging host Masuk of Monroe 3-2 the day before.

Melillo hit the ball into left field, with no outs, to plate Todd Petersen who had doubles leading off, and advanced to third following walks to Josh Taylor and Shane Demers, with the game-ending run.

Newtown built a 4-0 lead behind some aggressive — and smart — base running. An error and two walks presented the Nighthawks with a bases-loaded, two-out situation in the opening inning. Catcher Matt Bradbury bounced a single through the first base hole for a 2-0 lead. Melillo stole home when he and Bradbury successful executed a double steal, making it 3-0.

In the second inning, Petersen attempted to steal second and put on the brakes and got in a rundown, allowing a base runner to score from third before being tagged out for the final out of the inning.

Glastonbury got a run back in the fourth and scored three in the fifth to tie the game, although it could have been worse for the Hawks. An error on a misplayed ball to the outfield allowed thee runs to score and the Glastonbury batter rounded the bases and was throw out at home as Bradbury held onto the ball, despite a collision, after taking second baseman Michael Cotton's relay throw.

Newtown starting pitcher Harry Lucas allowed only three hits four unearned runs, walked five, and struck out two. Tom Tavar allowed one hit and one walk, and fanned a batter, in two scoreless frames for the win.

The Hawks broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning to beat Masuk. Sammy Smith went 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, just one earned, walking two, and striking out one. Jack Petersen pitched 2.2 hitless innings, fanning seven and walking one, to pick up the victory in relief.

The Hawks fell behind 1-0 before going in front with a pair of runs in the third. Smith singled, Todd Petersen doubled, and Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to knot the score, and Demers followed with a sac fly of his own, for the go-ahead run. Masuk evened the game in the fifth.
