Tucker Garrity became Newtown High School's all-time point leader when he scored his first of four goals to help Newtown High School's boys' lacrosse team to a thrilling 11-9 win over visiting Bronxville of New York on May 11.

Garrity took a pass from Brett Pierce and whipped home a shot off the post into the top corner of the goal to get Newtown on the scoreboard late in the opening quarter. Bronxville had seized a 2-0 lead before Newtown got its offense going.

The record had stood since 2003 when Casey Kirch recorded 312 points. Garrity, who also tallied an assist versus Bronxville, now has 317, with one regular-season game, plus playoffs, remaining.

"It feels awesome. It's not what I'm looking for when I play. I'm a team-first guy. I'm not about my stats. If they come, they come," said Garrity, adding that his objective is to help the Nighthawks win.

Garrity broke the career assist record earlier this season, shattering Lewis Thompson's mark of 133, which had stood since 2011. His dad, Woody Thompson, was on hand and served as public address announcer — stepping in for Jason "J" Edwards — to announce the most recent record-setting effort by Garrity.

"To watch his maturation as a person, let alone as a player, is just tremendous," said Newtown Coach Scott Bulkley, adding that Garrity is a great leader for the team.

Garrity had a wildly successful night in the points department with a whopping 13 on four goals and nine assists in a 20-3 triumph over Bethel on May 9.

"You don't get all those points without great teammates," Bulkley said.

After winning handily over Bethel, the Bronxville clash was anticipated to be a tough one to help prepare the Hawks for the postseason.

Bronxville went ahead 3-1 and held a 3-2 lead after one quarter of play. Newtown knotted things at 3-3 on Jeffrey Garrity's net-finder just 45 seconds into the second quarter. The game continued to go back and forth and was tied 5-5 at halftime.

"It was early. All we needed to do was relax and let the game come to us," Bulkley said of the start.

The Nighthawks held an 8-7 lead after three quarters. Goals by Kyle Sullivan and Jeffrey Garrity pushed the lead to 10-7 before Bronxville closed to within 10-9 and threatened to tie.

Nighthawk goaltender Jake Dandrea made two late saves, and the defense stepped up to hold the lead. Jeffrey Garrity split a pair of defenders to move in and score an insurance tally with 1:47 left.

Jeffrey Garrity and Andre Sokk both scored twice, Jeffrey Garrity had two assists, and Aiden Coleman and Pierce each registered a goal and two assists in the win. Brennan Mayer logged an assist for the Nighthawks.

Connor Breslin and Jeffrey Garrity both had five ground ball scoops. Dandrea made eight saves.

Defenders Kyle Shirk, Shaine Luzietti, Alec Budd, Sokk, and Jake Bulkley played solidly in the back, as did defensive midfielders Michael Haddick, Breslin, Tanner Trede, and the Garrity brothers.

"When they play like that we're a tough team," Bulkley said.

In the win over Bethel, Coleman had four goals and three assists, Breslin had three goals, Sullivan, Jeffrey Garrity, and Pierce each scored twice, Mayer had a goal and an assist, Brendan Manka recorded two assists, and Will Swierbut and Nock Hobar each scored goals. Sokk and Bulkley both had seven ground ball scoops, and Tanner Stergue won 21 faceoffs.

When the boys took on Bronxville, the Nighthawks supported the Paul C. Sclafani Memorial Foundation to honor Paul Sclafani and his dedication to youth lacrosse. Donations benefited the foundation, which provides support, advocacy, and financial assistance to families who are dealing with brain cancer.
