Sluggers Manufacture And Walk Off With Wins As Streak Continues
Newtown High School's baseball team manufactured the only run in a 1-0 victory over host Pomperaug of Southbury, in a rescheduled contest on May 7, then earned a dramatic 3-2 walk-off victory over visiting Bethel on May 9. The Nighthawks visited Stratford the next day in another matchup that was rescheduled because of rain the week before, and they continued their winning ways with an 11-6 triumph.
The Nighthawks carried a four-game winning streak and 12-4 overall record into Wednesday's visit to Notre Dame-Fairfield, beginning at 4:15 pm.
Against Pomperaug, pitcher Andrew Ross was dominant, throwing a complete-game in which he allowed only three hits and struck out five batters.
The Nighthawks got their run in the fourth inning when Jake Oliger singled and later scored on Dylan Tyrell's sacrifice fly.
In the Bethel game, at Fairfield Hills, the Nighthawks trailed 2-1 in the sixth inning but fought back with single runs in the sixth and seventh, capped by Sam Czel's game-winning, walk-off single, on a hit over the center fielder's head.
"It was great to see these kids battle back and be able to win consecutive one run games," Newtown Coach Matt Memoli said. "Sam is such a gamer and for him to come up big in that spot was awesome."
Czel had two hits and Ben Harrison also had a hit and an RBI. Czel, Connor Barrett, and Tucker Kistner all scored runs for the Nighthawks.
Newtown pitcher Adam Beckett went five innings and allowed only one run - unearned - on three hits, and a walk; he struck out four.
Against Stratford, Eugene Citrano, Jason Hebner, and Lucas O'Brien each delivered a hit and two RBI; Jack Procaccini was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and a run scored; Czel was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored; and Czel, Oliger, and Tyrrell each scored a pair of runs. Oliger had two of the team's four stolen bases. Czel tripled, and Tyrell and O'Brien both doubled. Nighthawk batters drew seven walks.
Newtown's pitching was led by Austin Kasbarian who went five innings, allowing four hits, and two runs - one of which was earned.
The Nighthawks, after a visit to New Fairfield on Thursday, at 4:45 pm, close out the regular season with back-to-back home games against New Milford and Masuk of Monroe. Both games will take place at Fairfield Hills - the New Milford game on Monday, May 16, beginning at 6:30 pm, and the Masuk game the following day with a first pitch at 4 pm.
