Stamp Out Hunger On May 12
An important piece of paper arrived in the mail this week.
A postcard-size flier reminds residents that on Saturday, May 12, they can help âStamp Out Hungerâ and donât need to go farther than their mailboxes. Mail carriers will pick up any bags of nonperishable food items left at the mailbox and deliver them to the Newtown Social Services food pantry.
Newtown Post Office Officer in Charge Rich Crowther said this national program generates âtonsâ of food donations. The contributions go right back to the community.
âAll that is collected in Newtown stays in Newtown,â he said.
The chance to lend local support does not end on May 12, however. Mr Crowther said that both the post office and social services office at 3 Main Street beneath the police station will accept contributions for those who missed the opportunity May 12.
Social services Director Ann Piccini agreed that âStamp Out Hungerâ is the largest food drive for their pantry annually.
This week as mail carriers delivered reminders for nationwide food drive, Carminuccioâs Pizza prepared extra cheese and toppings to donate pizza to volunteers who will unpack the donations for the food pantry.
The Campbell Soup Company and the US Postal Service are co-sponsoring the food drive, an event created by The National Association of Letter Carriers NALC in conjunction with Americaâs Second Harvest, according the programâs website.
