Six Years For Shooting

LITCHFIELD — Scott Smith, 28, a former Newtown resident and a former New Milford police officer, was sentenced Thursday to a six-year prison term following his conviction on a charge of intentional manslaughter in the shooting  of a police suspect.

Smith had faced 5 to 40 years in prison after he was convicted in the December 1998 death of Franklyn Reid of New Milford.

Litchfield Superior Court Judge Charles Gill handed down the sentence. The sentencing came after Judge Gill turned down Smith’s request for a new trial.

Judge Gill released Smith on a $250,000 appeal bond.
