Softball Team Has More Final-Inning Heroics, Falls To Masuk, Rolls Behind Litke No-Hitter
Newtown High School’s softball team had another competitive game decided in the seventh inning when the Nighthawks defeated host New Milford 4-2 on May 1 — marking the fourth time the Nighthawks scored the decisive runs in their final at bat this spring.
“More gray hairs because of that,” Newtown Coach Megan Goyda said light-heartedly.
Gabby Ansman’s two-run single broke the tie. Sophia Caruso hit a two-run home run in the second inning and the Green Wave tied the score in the fifth. Addy Cordova pitched well, allowing six hits and striking out three batters for the win.
Goyda is pleased that different parts of her lineup have been getting the job done in key spots. This time it was the No. 8 hitter Ansman coming through after No. 7 batter Caruso delivered earlier in the game.
Newtown fell 7-1 to visiting Masuk of Monroe on May 3. Maddie Thoesen homered for the Newtown run. Masuk jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added on with three in the second. Cordova came on in relief in the second inning and pitched well, allowing only two runs the rest of the way but Masuk remained undefeated.
“They’re a tough team. They’re very good,” said Goyda, adding that her squad did not make adjustments at the plate against Masuk pitcher Julia Bacoulis who struck out a dozen Nighthawks.
The Hawks got back into the win column with a 12-5 triumph at Notre Dame-Fairfield on May 6. Cordova allowed just two earned runs and struck out four. Cordova also doubled and knocked in three runs; Thoesen had two hits, including a triple, and drove in three; and Gilly Boughan had a hit and two RBI. Julia Berry had two hits, including a double, and scored twice; Lila Accousti had two hits and three runs scored; and Bri Pellicone had a hit and run batted in.
Newtown defeated visiting Stratford 16-0 on May 7 and improved to 11-5 overall with four games to play. The Hawks scored 12 in the second inning on the way to a five-inning, mercy-rule triumph. Rheya Litke pitched a no-hitter with two walks and ten strikeouts. Berry hit a grand slam for her four RBI; Ansman tripled and drove in three; and Pellicone had three hits, including a triple, and also knocked in three.
