Please Vote Yes On May 14
To the Editor:
On May 14, we have a second opportunity to vote for the Board of Education budget. Please vote yes!
The Board of Finance already cut the budget for our schools by a million dollars, even before the first vote on April 23. Now, the Legislative Council has cut an additional $1.4 million dollars from the budget. These cuts will already put into jeopardy the top notch education Newtown children deserve, and may make it difficult for the members of the Search Committee to hire a top notch Superintendent for our schools.
Anyone who tells you to vote against the budget because they think schools used to be better is silly. Slashing the school budget is not going to improve our schools! All it will do is make Newtown inferior to other Connecticut towns.
You may be worried or angry about higher gas and grocery prices. I get it; I’m a senior on a fixed income. But voting down the school budget is actually bad for your pocketbook. If you plan to put your home up for sale, you may find that there’s little interest in purchasing a home in a town that voted down its school budget.
Do you have children in Newtown schools? Do you own a home in Newtown? Do you love Newtown and want our beautiful town to thrive? Then support our schools! There’s still time to prevent more drastic cuts. Please be sure to vote yes on May 14!

Newtown
There is a lot of waste still that can be eliminated – like school buildings that could be consolidated.
There is still plenty of money to educate our youth. Please don’t fall for the cries of we are depriving the children. Budgets are prepared with plenty of pork.
