Snapshot: Kevin Hoyt
Occupation: I coach track at Newtown High School, and I when I’m not coaching, I work at the Nike store in Westport.
Family: My mom, Tina Welsh, and stepdad, Ted Welsh, live in Newtown. My dad, Ray, and stepmom, Betsy Hoyt, are in Sandy Hook. My sister, Andrea, lives on Cape Cod. I have a stepbrother, Matt, at Ohio State, and my stepsister, Lindsey, is a junior at Newtown High School.
Pets: We don’t have any pets. We’re looking for kittens, right now. Kooks, our 21-year-old cat, died this past winter.
How long have you lived in Newtown? I’ve been in Newtown all my life. I graduated from Newtown High School in 2008, and from Keene State in New Hampshire in 2012.
What do you like to do in your free time? I enjoy running and staying active, and spending a lot of time outdoors. I just finished the Boston marathon, running 72nd overall out of 32,000 runners, with a time of two hours and 28 minutes. Having those hills in the last six miles or so was a little difficult. My next marathon will be the New York Marathon, this fall. I hope to improve my time and place from Boston. I run about 15 miles a day when I’m in full training. I enjoy watching movies, and traveling, when I get the chance,
Do you have a favorite movie? Not really a favorite movie or actor. I prefer comedies and indie movies over the popular action movies. I do like Chris Farley and Will Farrell movies. They’re very funny.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We have a condo in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and I like going there. We’ve been going there since I was young. It’s very familiar and I’ve kind of grown up down there. So I’m going somewhere different, but somewhere I know well.
What is the best thing about Newtown? I have to say I love the sense of community in Newtown. I go out and run here a lot, and people always say, “Oh, I saw you here, I saw you there.” People know you here.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? Running has been a big part of my life, so it’s the teams I’ve run on. There’s that sense of community from the people I run with, who have the same goals. Seeing other people put in the same hard work as me is inspiring, because I know what they’re going through.
Did you have a favorite toy growing up? Yes, and I still have it, actually. It’s a stuffed koala bear named Sally. I was really young when I got Sally, so I can’t remember I time when I didn’t have her.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? A chocolate lace and sweet cream sundae with fudge sauce from Dr Mike’s.
