Newtown High Laxwomen Continue Domination

The Newtown High School girls’ lacrosse team won its fourth straight game and eight consecutive South-West Conference tilt with an 18-6 tripling of Weston on the road on May 1, the only game the Nighthawks played last week.

The Nighthawks stretched their winning streak to five with a 14-2 win at Lauralton Hall on Tuesday. The Nighthawks are 10-2 overall this spring.

In the win over Weston, Courtney Gleason (four goals and two assists) and Lisa Vendel (six goals and an assist) sparked the offense again.

Gleason began play this week as the team’s leader with 40 goals and Vendel was second on the team with 34 netfinders. Betsy Vendel, Kaitlin Brophy and Meghan Carney all added two goals and Stephanie Paproski and Erin Brown also scored in the win.

Goaltenders Lisa Isabelal (six saves on eight shots) and Marnie Thompson (three saves on six shots) split time between the posts.

Libby Feltch won key faceoffs to allow Newtown to dominate the transition game. Jen O’Connell anchored the defensive effort.

In Tuesday’s win over Lauralton, Isabella stopped 10 of 12 shots on goal.

Lisa Vendel led all scorers with six tallies, Brophy had three goals and Gleason had three goals and a pair of assists. Betsy Vendel added a goal and three assists, Kelly O’Connor scored a goal and Paproski had an assist.

The Hawks were scheduled to host New Fairfield on Thursday and will entertain Masuk under the lights at the Blue and Gold Stadium on Saturday, May 10 at 7 pm.

NHS will be at Treadwell park to host East Lyme Monday at 4 pm.
