Be Cautious When It Comes To Skin Cancer

Well away from the sunshine, dermatologist William Notaro, MD, met with Visiting Nurse Association of Newtown (VNA) members in the Edmond Town Hall lobby this week in a publicity effort to bring residents in for skin cancer screenings.

“Anyone can be at risk, the fair skinned especially,” Dr Notaro explained. He urges residents to take seriously any spots on the skin that bleed despite lack of injury, spots that do not heal, or moles that change, he said.

On Saturday, May 17 —  a weekend morning when most residents can come, said VNA member Mae Schmidle — a screening will take place from 9:30 to 11 am at Newtown Senior Center. With Ms Schmidle were VNA Vice President Mary Tietjen, and members Luella Leitner and Anna Wiedemann.

Additional screenings will also be available at Danbury Hospital on Tuesday and Thursday, May 20 and 22, between 6 and 8 pm. Guests must register by 7:30. Visit www.DanburyHospital.org for more information.

Dr Notaro recently earned recognition in Connecticut Magazine as one of the leading dermatologists in the state. He will be performing the screenings on May 17.
