Travel Softball Tryouts

Newtown Babe Ruth Softball will hold tryouts for its U10 and U12 travel teams on Saturday, May 17, at the Newtown Middle School. Tryouts are mandatory for all players and players must be registered in Babe Ruth. Cost is $175 (which includes uniforms, games and tournaments) for the season, which runs from June 20 through August 10. The U10 division will tryout from 10 am to 12 noon while the U12 division will tryout from 12 noon to 2 pm. Call travel director Rich Van Waalwijk at 426-1673 for further information. In the event of rain, the tryouts will be on Sunday, May 18, with U10 meeting from 1-3 pm and U12 meeting from 3-5 pm.

 

Cheerleading Coordinator Sought

The Newtown Pop Warner Football/Cheerleading program is seeking a new cheerleading coordinator for the 2003 season. If interested, please call Newtown Pop Warner president Dave Benore at 426-3488.

Softball (U14) Tryouts

The Newtown Heat traveling softball team is scheduling tryouts for the 2003 season. Newtown residency is not required. Call 426-5001 or 426-1886 for further information on the tryouts.

City Center Grand Prix

The City Center Grand Prix – a race for miniature cars attained speeds of 25 miles an hour – will be held on June 8 on the streets of Danbury. The Grand Prix will be the focal point of a daylong festival on the Danbury green featuring food, kids games, racecar displays, and live music. WRKI-FM (I-95) will present the festival, which will benefit the American Red Cross of Western Connecticut.

 

WCSU Basketball Camp

The women’s basketball program at Western Connecticut State University will be sponsoring its 2003 Girls’ Basketball Hoop Camp July 28 through August 1, 9 am to 3:30 pm each day. Namath Football Camp

Ted Alex Memorial Golf

The 20th annual Ted Alex Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, June 14, at 8 am, at the Fair View Farms Golf Course in Harwinton. Slamma Jamma Camp

The Slamma Jamma Basketball Camp will be offered in Newtown and Bethel this summer. The Newtown camp will be held July 7-11 at the Edmond Town Hall. Session I for girls and boys ages 7-13 will meet from 9 am to 3 pm and Session II for boys and girls 5-9 will meet from 9 am to 12:30 pm. The camp will concentrate on the fundamentals with games, contests, individual and team skills. Bob Ruderman (former Mattatuck Community College coach) and Art Leary (head coach at Southern Connecticut State University) will direct the camp. Whitwater Race

The 33rd annual 10-mile Whitewater Race for Canoes and Kayaks, part of the 2003 Connecticut Whitewater State Championship New England series, will be held Saturday, May 17, starting at 11 am from Great Falls in Falls Village. Recreational paddlers and professionals are welcome. The course starts with a quick Class II rapid, followed by five miles of relative flat water. Then there are numerous Class II rapids and faster water in the last five miles. All paddlers must wear over-the-shoulder life jackets. Registration fees are $10 per amateur paddler and $15 per professional paddler (taken during registration period from 9 am to 10:30 am). There will be awards for amateurs and professionals. Housatonic Classic Volunteers

Volunteers are being fought to work in the annual Housatonic Valley Classic bike race. Marshals are needed along the 10-town course that begins in Danbury and goes through New Fairfield, Sherman, New Milford, Bridgewater, Brookfield, Newtown, Redding, Bethel and Ridgefield. Pick a town and you will be set up with your own corner, a bright t-shirt, and the loudest whistle in North American. There will be one training meeting. Golf For MADD

MADD will hold a “Drive One Home For Madd” on Saturday, June 14, 10 am to 5 pm, at Golf Quest on 1 Sand Cut Road in Brookfield. There will be family fun activities and golf and baseball contests. There will be longest drive, iron accuracy, putting, chipping and miniature golf contests as well as home run and fastest pitch contests. Prizes will be awarded. There will also be food, a kids’ fun booth, and free safety information. Safe Boating Expo

The Housatonic River Sail & Power Squadron will hold a Safe Boating Expo on Saturday, May 17, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Birdseye Street Boat Launch on the Housatonic River in Stratford. A display will include examples of appropriate life jackets for different water sports, fire extinguishers, literature on the United States Power Squadrons® and its educational programs, and inspectors will be on hand to perform FREE vessel safety checks. At the same time, the HRS&PS will be accepting registrations for a 10-hour Boat Smart Class, which will be held in two five-hour sessions on Saturdays, May 31 and June 7, at the Housatonic Boat Club.
