This is golf tournament season and in the coming months area golfers will have the opportunity participate in a couple of benefit tournaments - the Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble benefitting the Newtown Scholarship Association and the Newtown Junior Womenâs Golf Tournament.

The 11th annual Jack Friel Memorial Golf Scramble to benefit the Newtown Scholarship Association will be held on Monday, June 16, 2003, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe.
Check-in time is 10:30; shotgun at 11:30. The event, sponsored by Newtown Savings Bank, is one of several major fundraisers for the NSA, which awards more than $150,000 annually in scholarships to college-bound high school graduates and continuing students.
This yearâs goal is to raise over $35,000 for student scholarships. A tournament entry fee of $150 per person includes golf, lunch, cocktails, and a buffet dinner (dinner only is $50). Team handicaps will be used and plenty of great prizes will be awarded, including low gross and low net scores. To sponsor a hole ($150), be a special-location sponsor (first tee, official scoreboard;Â $200), sponsor a foursome ($600), or donate a gift to be awarded as a prize or raffle item please contact Mark Fries (426-8507) or Jim Morley (426-8966).
The Newtown Junior Womenâs Club will hold its first golf tournament on Monday, August 18, at Whitney Farms Golf Club in Monroe. Tee off (four-man scramble) will be at 9 am.
There will be first-, second- and third-place prizes, longest drive and closest to the pin prizes, and four hole-in-one prizes (2003 Harley Davidson, Ping golf clubs, titanium golf driver and $250 pro shop gift certificate).
Cost is $135 per golfer and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, continental breakfast, buffet lunch and tournament gifts. Sponsorships are also being sought for platinum ($1,500), gold ($1,000), silver ($600), bronze ($225), hole ($100) and friend ($50) levels.
