Third Annual Great Pootatuck Duck Race Splashes In May

What does May bring? May flowers? Mother’s Day? Memorial Day? All are true memorable May events but none of these have the splash that the Third Annual Great Pootatuck Duck Race provides. From 10 am until 3 pm on May 24, the ducks will be gathering for their annual swim down the Pootatuck River. All Newtown is invited.

Many activities are being planned for Duck Race Day. The Governor’s Horse Guard will be on hand to herald the dumping of the ducks. There will be a Moon Walk and other games. Magic shows and face painting will enliven the day.

The Yankee Maids Chorus, a division of the Sweet Adelines, will warble some tunes and Eric Bagger will sing and play his guitar. Mike Porco’s Newtown Karate Academy will give a demonstration. The Congregational Church will have a booth and the Methodist Church will have a tag sale to benefit the Children of Africa Fund. This fund benefits orphans from the civil wars and famine.

Civic organizations such as the Newtown Historical Society, the Sandy Hook Fire Department and Newtown Woman’s Club will also have booths. Many other organizations have signed on, as well. Some groups will simply hand out information, others will sell items.

Each duck will have a number on its bottom that corresponds to the number on the tickets that were purchased. Prizes include a Cub Cadet 15 Horsepower Tractor, a weekend in New York, an X-Box Game Cube, a beautiful framed print by Newtown’s Betty Christiansen, and 15 other prizes.

Tickets cost $5 and may be purchased at the Newtown Health and Racketball Club, Sandy Hook Wine and Liquor, Good Taste, the Toy Tree, Sandy Hook Deli, Sandy Hook Barber Shop, Newtown Drug Center, Homesteads, the C.H. Booth Library, Church Hill Wines and Sprits, the offices of Dr Gellert and Dr Young, or from any member of the Newtown Lions Club.

For general information call Jim Larin at 426-8971 or Jerry Cole at 426-4529. Anyone desiring to set up a booth should call Gordon Williams at 426-6443.
