Max Brownstein

Max Brownstein died quietly at the Homestead at Newtown on May 3. He was born June 24, 1910, in New Haven, son of the Late Louis and Rebecca (Tzivin) Brownstein.

Mr Brownstein moved to Danbury in 1947 after purchasing Merrills Cosmetics. A well-known businessman, he developed Embi Cosmetics, and his store became a landmark for more than 50 years.

An avid horseman, Mr Brownstein was active in both riding and driving horses. He was a member of the Sheriff’s Pose, American Driving Society, Newtown Bridle Lanes, Connecticut Dressage Association, and Litchfield Hills Driving Club. Mr Brownstein was a World War II veteran, and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by his beloved horse, Bamboo; his sisters, Anne Levine of New Haven, Bernice Rochlin of West Haven; his primary caretakers and beloved friends, Barbara and Tom Lutz of Newtown; his niece and her husband, Laurie and Charles P. Luedee of South Meriden; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews; and many wonderful friends.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his three brothers, Benjamin, Meyer, and Samuel Brownstein, and his great-niece, Rachel Luedee.

Friends may call at The Homestead, 166 Mt Pleasant Road, Newtown, on Friday, May 9 from 2 to 4 pm. Burial and a period of mourning will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Rachel Luedee Trust for Children, c/o Attorney Richard A. Rochlin, 297 South Road, Farmington, CT 06032.

The Southbury Funeral Home of Munson-Lovetere, 245 Main Street North, Route 6, is in charge of arrangements.
