Many Helped To ‘Lose The Litter’

To the Editor:

A wide range of people and groups took advantage of the good weather on Lose the Litter Day to give Newtown’s roads a thorough spring cleaning.

As usual, there were so many people and groups involved that a complete listing is impossible. The borough let us raise the banner along Queen Street. Fred Hurley and the Highway Department provided the gloves and bags for the volunteers and let us leave the bagged trash at the Highway Department garage. The Board of Education allowed us to use the Middle School property. The Newtown Bee helped make everyone aware of the event. The elementary schools and Saint Rose School also helped spread the word by sending out flyers. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies all did their part, including members of Pack 70 and Pack 470 and the Brownies from Hawley School. The Congregational Church confirmands cleaned Church Hill Road. My fellow Lions made the event possible by cleaning up roads and performing the countless small tasks that needed to be done. The bulk of the work, however, was done by individuals, young and old, who demonstrated their civic pride by taking care of their own corners of town. Many participants suggested that Lose the Litter Day should take place more often. I agree. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all took a little time to lose the litter every day?

Thanks again to all the people who turned out to help this year.

Sincerely,

Jerome A. Mayer
