Monks To Visit Yoga Center

WOODBURY — The Woodbury Yoga Center will be hosting seven Tibetan Buddhist Monks from the Gaden Jangste Monastery over the Memorial Day weekend.

The Monks are on tour to raise awareness regarding the potential extinction of the Tibetan Buddhist culture at the hands of the communist Chinese, to share the joy and compassion of Tibetan Buddhism, and to raise funds for the monasteries so they can maintain their cultural and religious identity while living in exile in India.

They will be giving different teachings every night on one of the following: Lam-Rim (the graded paths leading to liberated mind), The Four Noble Truths, and Lojong (mind training). Each event will begin with ceremonies, which the monks will chant accompanied by musical instruments for purification, the development of compassion, long life, healing, protection, or the removal of obstacles.

The Monks are also available for private consultations regarding spiritual, personal, or secular matters and there will be a doctor of traditional Tibetan medicine available for individual consultations before the programs. Call in advance if you are interested in a consultation of any kind.

There is a suggested donation of $21 for the programs, although no one will be turned away. The programs are as follows: Friday, May 26, from 8:15 to 10:15 pm; Saturday, May 27, from 7 to 9 pm; and Sunday, May 28, from 2 to 4 pm. The Woodbury Yoga Center is located at 122 West Side Road, Woodbury. Call 263-2254 for more information or directions.
