A Traditional May Fair At New Waldorf School

The Housatonic Valley Waldorf School kicked off the month of May with a traditional May Fair last Saturday at its new facility in Dodgingtown.

Well over 100 people braved the hot, sticky, summer-like air to join the annual celebration sponsored by the Waldorf Association.

Crowding under a number of small tents, families from Newtown and the surrounding area gathered to participate in traditional country fair activities, from sheep shearing to face painting and flower crown making.

Music filled the air as spring songs were sung, and for the first time, the Morris Dancing Troupe performed. Ed Witkins of Bridgewater supplied a constant din of banjo and guitar renditions of popular country music.

The day was punctuated with a traditional dance around the May Pole, which wore a peach basket decorated with flowers and ribbons.

Throughout the day, families enjoyed a pot luck luncheon, as the shade supplied by tents offered reprieve from the hot sun.

It was an ideal day for Waldorf families to check out their new school facility, located in the buildings that formerly housed the Newtown Montessori School.

The Housatonic Valley School is a growing Waldorf school that emphasizes education rooted in the belief that learning should nurture a child’s whole being, balancing intellect, body, and spirit.

There are over 600 Waldorf schools in 32 countries, making it one of the largest and fastest growing non-sectarian educational initiatives in the world.
