Tennis, Golf, Baseball, And Softball Teams Pile Onto Win Totals

Newtown High School’s tennis, golf, baseball, and softball teams continued winning ways with victories to cap the first week of May.

The girls’ tennis squad extended its winning streak to eight matches with a 5-2 victory over New Fairfield on May 6 and a 7-0 triumph over New Milford the next day. The Nighthawks improved to 9-4 overall as they head into their final three matches of the campaign.

On the boys’ courts, the Nighthawks made it five wins in a row by also defeating New Fairfield and New Milford on the same days; The Hawks bested both squads by 6-1 scores and improved to 9-4 heading into the regular-season finale when Masuk of Monroe visits for a match on Monday, May 11, beginning at 3:45 pm.

Fore! Golf Teams Roll

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ golf teams picked up victories this past week. The girls’ squad shot a 189 to defeat both Bunnell of Stratford (242) and Brookfield (261) in a match at Rock Ridge Country Club on May 6. The Nighthawks improved to 9-0 overall this spring.

Sarah Houle shot a 43, Molly Wilson had a 44, Liz Weisgerber shot a 54, and Brenna Kelly had a 48.

The boys improved to 6-3 by defeating host Bunnell on May 6. The Hawks shot a 170 and Bunnell fired a 198. Josh Houle shot a 39, Colin Patrick shot a 42, Ryan Patrick had a 44, Jacob Burden had a 45, and Graham Hubbert shot a 52.

Hardball And Softball Success

The baseball team blasted visiting Stratford 15-2 in a game at Fairfield Hills on May 6. The Night-hawks outscored four opponents 58-6 en route to extending their winning streak to seven and improving to 10-3 overall heading into May 8 and 9 dates with Bethel and Berlin. Against Stratford, the Hawks broke the game wide open with seven runs in the fifth inning.

Michael Parker had a double and drove in three runs. Julian Dunn had two hits, including a triple, two runs batted in, and scored two runs. David Matthews also had a triple as part of a two-hit day, and drove in a run and scored once. Sam Czel had a hit, two RBI, and a run scored.

On the mound, Jason Hebner pitched 41/3  innings, allowing two runs on eight hits; he struck out five batters. Luke Rustici and Connor Miller combined for 22/3  innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

The softball squad, after seeing its five-game winning streak come to an end in a loss to nonconference foe St Joseph, won two consecutive contests. Newtown got back to its high-scoring/strong pitching winning ways in a 16-2, six-inning run-rule victory at Immaculate of Danbury on May 5. Sara Kennedy homered in the second consecutive game as part of a 3-for-5 performance; she also tripled, drove in three runs, and scored three times. Mikayla Kuligowski was 2-for-5 with a bases-loaded triple, four RBI, and three runs scored. Katie Laaksonen was 2-for-4, including a triple, and knocked in three runs. Megan Goyda was 3-for-3 with a trio of runs scored. Lauren Wilcox and Gillian Galante split pitching duties and combined to strike out 11 batters.

The Hawks, the next day, toppled Stratford 13-0 to carry a 9-4 overall mark into a scheduled visit to Bethel on May 8. Read about all of the action in the May 15 print edition of The Bee.
