Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Newtown Senior Center membership DUES are $12 for the year and are due no later than June 26.

*Life, Language and the Pursuit of Happiness: Ernest Hemingway Alive by B.L. Walker and Richard Clark. Keeping history alive by reliving with Ernest those days from World War I through the inauguration of John F. Kennedy on Monday, May 11, at 1 pm. Call to reserve a seat.

*A brief educational presentation on planning ahead for all the right reasons, Celebrating A Life Lived, will be Wednesday, May 13, at 1 pm. Call to reserve a seat.

*FRIDAY LUNCHEON will be held on May 15. Reservations must be made and paid for by May 13. Cost is $5.

*ECUMENICAL BIBLE STUDY GROUP will meet at the center on Fridays at 1 pm. Call 270-4310 for information.

 

Upcoming Programs

*COMMISSION ON AGING will meet on Monday, May 18, at 5 pm.

*Commencing on Monday, May 18, at 2:30 pm, Patty the hairdresser will be at the center once a month.

*RSVP LUNCHEON will be May 20 at 11:30 the Amber Room. The center will be closing at 11 am.

*CLOSED Monday, May 25 for Memorial Day.

*THE ANCIENT ART OF SPINNING on Wednesday, May 27, at 1 pm, explains the traditional wool process, with a unique blend of demonstrations and hands-on activities and story-telling.

*Casino gambling at MOHEGAN SUN CASINO, with $10 food coupon or free buffet $20 free bet, Depart at 8 am on Thursday, May 28; cost is $30.

*MASONICARE’S HOSPICE ART AND PHOTO EXHIBIT will be Friday, May 29, at 2 pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served. The senior’s van will transport to the facility. Call to sign up.

*AARP DRIVER SAFETY refresher program will be Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. You must attend both classes. Space is limited; call to reserve a spot.

*Seniors age 70+ are invited to participate in a JURIED ARTS SHOW at Pomperaug Woods, Southbury, Friday to Sunday, September 25–27. Categories include painting, drawing, sculpture, and photography. Submit photographs of three pieces by Friday, June 5. Pick up entry forms and more information at the Newtown Senior Center.

 

Day Trips

*BREWIN’ UP FUN IN HARTFORD — Visit the elaborate Victorian Mark Twain House on Thursday, June 4, then lunch at the Chowder Pot, and the last stop will be the Thomas Hooker Brewery, with a tour of how ales and lagers are brewed and samples at the tasting bar. Depart at 8:15 am; cost is $76.

*Ace In The Hole Productions presents MY LONG LOST BROTHER ELVIS at the Brownstone on Thursday, June 11. Enjoy a full luncheon menu and great music and a bushel of laughs with Tommy Walker’s Elvis. Depart at 8:30 am; cost is $86.

*The BOSTON POPS with JAMES TAYLOR at Tanglewood in Lee, Mass on Sunday, August 30. Enjoy a luncheon at the Cork N’ Hearth complete with all the fixings. Reserve seats for the Boston Pops. Only a few tickets left. Depart 9 am; cost is $110.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Monday: AM cards, hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, movie.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, cards; PM mah jongg, Scrabble, Wii bowling.

Friday: AM mah jongg, Quilts of Valor, PM Bible study group, knitting, movie.

 

Menu For Week Of

May 11–15

Monday: BBQ chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, bean blend vegetables, buttermilk biscuit.

Tuesday: Egg drop soup with crackers, sausage and pepper grinder, tossed salad with cucumber and Italian dressing, fruit cocktail.

Wednesday: Salisbury steak with gravy, mashed potato, diced carrots, whole wheat bread, oatmeal raisin cookie.

Thursday: Chicken parmesan, spaghetti with marinara sauce, broccoli cuts, garlic bread, mixed fruit juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, May 18: Turkey burger on a roll with ketchup, rosemary roasted potato, chuck wagon blend vegetables, mandarin oranges.

Tuesday, May 19: Cream of broccoli soup with crackers, oven roasted chicken quarter, sweet potato pone, garden peas, seedless rye bread, iced vanilla cake.
