Middle Gate Elementary School Celebrates Reading

Students sat in a community circle in Middle Gate Elementary School’s gym to kick off this year’s Middle Gate Loves To Read week on Monday, April 4.

“I am really excited about today,” said Middle Gate Principal Judith Liestman to the entire student body assembled before her.

The community circle was held as a book-themed energizer to prepare the students for the week’s events. Organizer for the event and Middle Gate teacher Mary Blair said two authors will be visiting the school this week and students will celebrate reading with “camp outs” in the library, among other things.

Ms Liestman said the school’s used book sale will also be held during the week; last year’s used book sale had 16,000 books for sale.

To energize the students, Ms Blair and music teacher Tina Jones lead a chant called “Burgers And Books,” which had the students finish lines either Ms Blair or Ms Jones began.

“When I say ‘lettuce’ you say ‘read,’” said Ms Blair to the students.
