SCAN Spring Show Offering A Large Collection At Booth Library
A collection of 162 works of art has been put on view at C.H. Booth Library, and will remain on view until Sunday, May 9, as the Society of Creative Arts of Newtownâs 40th Annual Spring Juried Show. Works include oils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics, mixed media, graphics, and sculpture.
During the showâs opening reception on May 2, show chairperson Roberta Shea presented more than $2,000 in cash prizes to area artists whose works represent some of the finest examples of contemporary and traditional art. The jury of selection and awards was made up of Janice Baragwanath, Leslie Lillien Levy, and Shauna Shane.
Among the artists recognized for their achievements, Julie Hopkins received the Larry Newquist Award for Excellence for her pastel âLittle and Big Trees,â an honor that was accompanied by a $500 cash prize; Pamela Reese received the Richard Ochs Memorial Award for her bucolic landscape oil painting titled âMaple Bank Farm,â which included a $200 prize; and Rick Daskam received the Lois Zimmerman Memorial Award for his oil painting titled âHarbor Rocks,â a $150 prize.
Additional award winners and award sponsors were The Bee Publishing Company Award ($150), which went to Ruth Newquist for her watercolor âHistoric Barnâ; The Newtown Savings Bank Award ($150) to Susan Warner for âGregory,â an acrylic work; and The Taunton Press Award ($150) to Susan Jositas for the oil painting âSunkissed.â
In addition, The Betty Christensen Appreciation Award ($100) was presented to Rosemary McClain for âQuizzical Raven,â an acrylic; The Savings Bank of Danbury Award ($100) was given to Meg Glahn for her watercolor âSpring Is Just Around the Cornerâ; and The Barn Gallery Award (a $50 gift certificate) was awarded to Vikki Bouffad for her watercolor âCherries Jubilee.â
SCAN also presented four three awards, each accompanied by $100. This yearâs winners were Ralph Schwartz for her pastel âInto The Mist,â Laura Wilk for a watercolor called âPeony Interiors,â and Joseph Keogan for an acrylic titled âApples For Sale.â
The exhibition can be viewed any time the library is open: Friday, 11 am to 5 pm; Saturday, 9:30 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, noon to 5 pm. Many of the works are available for purchase.
