Nothing More Important Than A Life
Nothing More Important Than A Life
To the Editor:
If you, along with many others, find yourself texting or using your phone while driving, I ask this: What needs to happen before you realize that there is nothing more important than a life?
While technology has clearly allowed our society much advancement, it has also taken away from our quality of life, and in some cases, caused us to take chances we might not otherwise take.
We have all been on the road watching a car drive erratically only to find the person texting or leaning to the side with a cellphone adhered to their ear. Many think they can handle it and multitask; however, that seems like an ignorant response, and there are hundreds of studies that say different.
If you are one of those people that feel you need to be productive in the car, or that you just canât wait to make a call, answer a message or check a text, I am here to tell you that it can wait. If you have not seen the movie Seven Pounds with Will Smith, I encourage you to do so, as it will move you emotionally on this very issue.
Perhaps the most compelling reason to change this behavior is for our children. Whether your child is already driving, or will be at some point in the future, we need to show them by example that this is a dangerous habit that can cost lives.
If you need a push to make the commitment, go to Oprah.com where she has set up a pledge called the No Phone Zone, or perhaps even more motivating, ask your child to remind you not to use the phone or text while driving.
Letâs use this upcoming Motherâs Day to make a difference in the community in which we live, and work together to prevent this habit â talk to your family, friends, and colleagues. For those that already have strict rules and donât text or use phones while driving, thank you for setting the example for all of us!
