Local Stroller Strides Supports National Womenâs Health Week
Stroller Strides programs in Newtown and surrounding areas are encouraging women to honor National Womenâs Health Week, a weeklong celebration beginning on Motherâs Day, May 9.
Designed by the US Department of Health and Human Servicesâ Office of Womenâs Health, the nationwide initiative strives to empower women to make their health a top priority. Highlights of the campaign include recommendations for women in fitness, nutrition, health care, and avoiding risky behaviors, such as smoking and excess alcohol use.
âWomen are so accustomed to taking care of others and it is common for them to put their own health on the back burner,â said Lisa Druxman, founder of Stroller Strides. âWomen in the Newtown area should look and feel their best. Good health should not be considered a luxury.â
Local Stroller Strides owners, who teach exercise classes to area moms along with their babies, acknowledge that jam-packed schedules make eating well and exercising challenging for many women. The key to changing this pattern, Ms Druxman says, is getting in â and sticking to â a routine that is convenient and fun.
âNational Womenâs Health Week presents an ideal opportunity for women to work on their diet or try a new type of exercise,â said Ms Druxman. âWhether theyâre stuck in a rut or havenât exercised in months, now is the time for them to take charge and make changes.â
âDuring National Womenâs Health Week it is important to educate our wives, mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and girlfriends about the steps they can take to improve their health and prevent disease. Remind women that taking care of themselves is essential to living longer, healthier, and happier lives,â emphasized Frances Ashe-Goins, acting director of the Office of Womenâs Health in the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Stroller Strides, a total fitness program for new moms with exercises they can do with their babies, incorporates power walking with intervals of strength and body toning using exercise tubing and the stroller. All classes are taught by nationally certified instructors, and focus on improving cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility.
In addition, local Stroller Strides owners also organize LUNA Moms Club playgroups and moms night out events, which are designed to give women an opportunity to socialize and further relationships. According to Ms Druxman, it is these elements that make the Stroller Strides program a success, since they allow women to make the most of their time.
âWe understand that many women multitask and must find exercise options that donât keep them away from their busy to-do list,â said Ms Druxman. âThat is why local Stroller Strides owners have designed their workouts to include several different components. This way, moms get a well-rounded, effective, and enjoyable workout in just an hour of their time.â
