Let The Chips Fall In Abuse Cases
Let The Chips Fall In Abuse Cases
To the Editor:
I have read with interest the letters regarding the elimination of the statute of limitations for suits involving child sex abuse. Some, including one from the esteemed former first selectman Joe Borst, seemed to think it may be a bad idea and actually targeted Catholics and the Church unfairly. There is certainly no evidence to support that belief. It is unlikely our competent, ethical, and honest politicians could or would ever pass a law targeting a specific innocent target like that. That is essentially a bill of attainder and is forbidden by the Constitution. Mr Borst should know from his own personal political experience how competent officials make decisions.
Then again there is a substantial amount of evidence worldwide that some in the Catholic Church may have targeted innocent children unfairly. Perhaps it is not unreasonable, in the interest if justice, for this bill to proceed. As someone who believes in justice, and as a committed atheist, I say trust in G-d and let the chips fall where they may.
