Lacrosse Teams Keep Winning
Newtown High Schoolâs girlsâ and boysâ lacrosse teams continue to win. The girls improved to 8-1 overall following a pair of 16-goal outbursts: 16-5 win over visiting New Milford on April 28 and a 16-3 win at Masuk of Monroe the next afternoon. The boys, following their only two losses of the year, carried a four-game winning streak into Wednesdayâs clash with non-conference opponent Old Lyme (after The Bee sports section went to press).
The Newtown girls have scored no fewer than 16 goals in any of their eight wins. In the victory over New Milford, Kaitlyn Brophy led all scorers with four goals, and Lisa Vendel and Meghan Bridges both netted three. Goaltender Celeste Cheung made 12 saves.
The boys got two goals apiece from Lewis Thompson, Colby Summerlin, and Will Northrop en route to an 8-5 win at New Milford on April 28. Thompson also had a pair of assists and Summerlin and Dan Hebert had an assist each.
Kyle OâConnor scooped six of Newtownâs 35 ground balls as the Nighthawks finished the game with a 35-34 advantage in that category. NHS goaltender Brandon Body made nine saves.
Newtown improved to 7-2 overall by toppling Southington 11-5 at home on May 3. Ryan Korth led the way with three goals, and Dylan Huebner, Hebert, and Summerlin had two apiece.
The boysâ teamâs lineup was bolstered by the return of Mike Mouchantat, who missed the first eight games due to an injury. Mouchantat won 12 of 16 faceoffs and a team-best nine ground balls. Huebner had seven of the Nighthawksâ 47 ground balls. Body made 16 saves and held Southington scoreless in the second quarter, during which Newtown built a 6-2 lead.
Both Newtown teams will tangle with the Pomperaug Panthers on Friday May 7. The boys are on the road and the girls will host the Panthers at 4 pm at Treadwell Park. The boys return home May 10 to entertain Brookfield at Blue & Gold Stadium at 7 pm.
