Abraham I. Cherkin

Devoted To Family

Abraham I. Cherkin, 89, of New York City, died May 2, in New York City. He was born in New York City, April 15, 1921.

He was the husband of Sylvia (Riss) Cherkin, his wife of 67 years. He was a devoted father to his daughter Arlene (Cherkin) Kreinik and her husband, Ted; and to his son William and his wife, Diane Brawarsky, of Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y. He was a loving grandfather to his three granddaughters; and a loving uncle to his three nephews and one niece.

Mr Cherkin served in the US Army Air Force as a staff sergeant in World  War II in North Africa and the Far East.

He founded A&A grocery store in New York City, which he operated until 1983. He then began a  new career in the law offices of Simpson Thatcher, a law firm in New  York City.

A memorial service was held  in New York on May 4. The family will  be holding Shiva and receiving friends at the home of Arlene Kreinik’s brother William, at 105 Lincoln Avenue in Hastings-on-Hudson, Thursday evening, May 6, from 4 to 8 pm, and Sunday afternoon, May 9, from 2 to 5 pm.
