Young Adults

*Summer Creative Writing: Attention rising eighth and ninth graders – Creative Writing Summer Camp has room for you. Local author and educator Joan Verniero will host the camp designed to foster a love of reading and writing, assisted by volunteers from the library’s adult creative writing groups.

Camp will meet on Thursdays, July 1, 8, 15, 29, and August 5, from 2 to 4 pm.  Space is limited to 10 students for those who will be entering grades 8 and 9 in the fall.

(A morning session for rising grades 6 & 7 is full.)

*Let’s Talk: A book discussion concerning The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, for readers in grades 5-8, is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19.  Join us from 4:30-5:30 for a lively discussion of the enchanting prelude to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Bilbo Baggins, a respectable, well-to-do hobbit, lives comfortably in his hobbit-hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to share in an adventure from which he may never return. Sign up at the main floor circulation desk or call the library.

Adult Programs

*Move Over, Dale Carnegie: Wally Wood will be at the library on Thursday, May 13, at 7:30 pm, to talk about his book The Relationship Edge in Business, which he co-authored with Jerry Acuff. Mr Wood’s program will focus on ways to build relationships with customers, colleagues, and bosses, a three-step process anyone can learn. The program is free and all are invited to attend.

*“Leaning In” with Norah Pollard: Norah Pollard, the daughter of Seabiscuit jockey John “Red” Pollard, will give a poetry reading at 3 pm on Sunday, May 16. Her book, titled Leaning In, will be available for purchase at the reading.

Prior to the Ms Pollard’s reading, the library will offer a special screening of last year’s feature film Seabiscuit on Friday, May 14, at 7 pm.

Both programs are free, but reservations are requested for the reading; call the library. Refreshments will be served.

*Put a Little Mystery into Your Life: Mystery and adventure writer Justin Scott will visit the library on Tuesday, May 18, at 7 pm, for a talk and book signing. He will talk about all of his books, but the featured book will be Treasure Island: Clueless Narrator, Charming Villain, Bodies Galore... So What’s New?

The program is free but like the Pollard program, reservations are requested.

*Computer Classes: Computer classes for beginners are scheduled for Saturdays, May 15 and June 12, each running from 9 am until noon.

An intermediate class is scheduled for Saturday, May 22. There is a $10 charge for the intermediate class.

*Change of Plans: Please note the next film in the library’s foreign film series, “Newtown a la Cannes,” has been postponed. Light of My Eyes, originally scheduled for a May 13 screening, will now be shown on June 3.
