Prominent Politicians Featured In Online CSU Course

DANBURY — Online CSU, the virtual Internet classroom of the Connecticut State University System, will offer a section of PS 100: Introduction to Political Science over ten weeks this summer that will include articles based on interviews with several prominent political figures.

The course — taught by Scott Benjamin, an adjunct instructor at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury — will be offered online from June 1 through August 6. It will cover several political movements and examine the use of polling and Internet impact campaigns. The course will include essays and threaded discussions.

There will be articles with Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz about primary reform in Connecticut and the use of electronic voting machines; former US Rep James Maloney about campaign finance reform; and Ctpoliticalwatch blogmaster Thomas Dudchik, who served as an aide for former Connecticut Gov Lowell Weicker, about the use of digital technology and its impact on political news coverage.

Other articles will include former state Sen Mark Nielsen, discussing former President Ronald Reagan’s conservatism; former WestConn political science Professor Russell Fryer, commenting about former President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal and former President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society; and Joe Gaylord, an aide to former US House Speaker Newt Gingrich, exploring The Contract With America.

Other articles will include David Boomer, a former special assistant to Connecticut Gov John G. Rowland, and Brian Schubert, press secretary to US Rep Nancy Johnson (R-New Britain), discussing the emerging Republican majority; author Ruy Teixeira, commenting about the emerging Democratic majority; Democratic campaign manager Jason Linde, discussing former President Bill Clinton and The Third Way; and Ken Dautrich, the director of the University of Connecticut poll, examining the impact of polling on campaigns.
