New Dance Courses Offered

At Community College

WATERBURY — The dance department at Naugatuck Valley Community College is offering three new dance courses this summer for teens and adults.

“Modern Jazz,” for ages 15 and up, is designed to introduce students and dance teachers to basic jazz dance techniques. Student will explore Alvin Ailey’s Horton modern dance as well as rhythm and blues, hot jazz and hip-hop. Instructor Avis Hatcher has taught modern, jazz, hip-hop, and African Caribbean dance throughout the country.

“Dance Pedagogy for Elementary Education” is open to current or prospective dance instructors ages 14 and up. The course will cover the basic techniques and methodology of teaching dance to children ages 6 through 9 using the standards established by the State of Connecticut and the National Dance Education Organization. Instructor Judith Ehrman-Shapiro is the cofounder of the Kiva Dance Collective and a dance therapist at Waterbury Hospital.

“A Fosse Jazz Workshop” for students ages 14 and up will explore the choreographic style of jazz dance created by renowned director and dancer Bob Fosse. Instructor Jim Clark is a member of Fosse’s Broadway cast and touring company.
