Good Neighbors Day
Good Neighbors Day
To the Editor:
Saturday, May 1, was a glorious day. The weather helped, but the people made it shine. Maybe the first Saturday in May should be declared Good Neighbors of Newtown Day, because several groups and organizations always give a full day of volunteering to neighbors who need a hand.
At Newtown Youth Services, kids and families arrived to participate in the 5th Annual Independent Living Day. They received their assignments and drove off with flowers, rakes, and Windex to do battle with spring cleanup for many seniors in all parts of Newtown.
When they returned, they reported on their experience. Here are some of the comments:
1. She thanked us and thanked us. I wish I could go back there every week.
2. He came outside and started working with us. We were kinda worried at first, but he did just fine.
3. What a sweet lady! Her next door neighbor even came over and helped us for awhile. We could tell she was sorry to see us go.
4. Heâs an amazing guy. Iâm glad I got to meet him.
5. Cleaning her refrigerator was fun. And she fed us too!
6. I liked working with my dad to help them.
We are grateful to the businesses that helped make the day possible â Lexington Gardens, The Newtown Deli, Bagelman, Subway, and Dunkinâ Donuts. Thanks also to the parents and other adults who drove and pitched in with the work, sending the message that helping seniors is important. And special thanks to all the kids who made spring brighter for some of their neighbors. We hope to see you all again next year!
