SCAN Staging 41st Annual Spring Juried Art Show

The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown, Inc (SCAN), will continue its 41st Annual Spring Juried Art Show at C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, through Sunday, May 8.

Displayed at this year’s show are 171 artworks, including sculpture, oil colors, watercolors, pastel, charcoal, acrylics, graphics, and mixed media pieces.

The artworks, which are being shown in the library’s main meeting room, are positioned on multiple display panels and along the walls.

SCAN held a reception and awards ceremony on Sunday, May 1, presenting 13 individual awards to art works judged to be of winning caliber.

An oil painting by artist Rick Daskum entitled “Artist’s House” was deemed the Best In Show by the judges.

Other entrants who won awards for their artworks were: Laura Wilk, Juan Ramirez, Jr, Harry Burman, Chrina May, Pamela Reese, Anne J. Smith, Anna Petranich, Julie Hopkins, Ruth Newquist, Susan Jositas, Michael Piccirillo, and Ann Kromer.

The judges in the art competition were Patricia Billeci, Bridget Herbst, and Andrew Lattimore.

SCAN is a non-profit art association of western Connecticut area artists.

As part of its activities, SCAN holds demonstration meetings which feature professional artists, conducts workshops with practicing artists, and has sketching  sessions with models.

SCAN sponsors three art shows each year. The organization also publishes a monthly members’ newsletter, SCAN INK.

Award Winners

The following were the awards for the SCAN Spring Show, as decided upon by the show’s judging panel.

*The Larry Newquist Award for Excellence (Best in Show, which is accompanied by $500 award): “Artist’s House,” by Rick Daskam.

*The Richard Ochs Memorial Award ($200): Laura Wilk, for her watercolor “Color by Newtown’s Egg Lady.

*Newtown Savings Bank Award ($150): “Kingpin,” an oil paintings by Juan Ramirez, Jr.

*Taunton Press Award ($150): “ME,” an acrylic by Harry Burman.

*Bee Publishing Award ($100): “Spring Landscape,” a pastel work by Chrina May.

*Union Savings Bank Award ($100): Pamela Reese’s oil “Winter Thaw.”

*Savings Bank of Danbury Award ($100): “Darwin’s IMP,” an oil by Anne J. Smith.

*Society of Creative Arts of Newtown Award ($100 each, four awards): “Girl with Braid,” a pastel by Anna Petranich; “The Great Swamp,” a pastel by Julie Hopkins; “Shining Thru,” a watercolor by Ruth  Newquist; and “Rose Arbor,” an oil by Susan Jositas.

*The Barn Gallery Award ($50 gift certificate): “Southford Falls Sunrise,” a pastel by Michael Piccirillo.

*The Koenig FrameWorks Award ($50 gift certificate): Ann Kromer’s acrylic “Quiet Spaces.”
